Key terms you need to know before towing

Tow Vehicle Terms

Maximum Towing Capacity
The maximum weight your vehicle can safely pull, as rated by the manufacturer under ideal conditions.
Payload Capacity
Maximum weight you can add to your vehicle including passengers, cargo, and tongue weight from the trailer. Often the actual limiting factor.
GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating)
The maximum combined weight of your loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer.

RV/Trailer Terms

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
The maximum allowable weight of the RV when fully loaded with cargo, water, and propane.
Dry Weight / UVW
The weight of the RV with no cargo, passengers, fluids, or options—straight from the factory.
Tongue/Hitch Weight
The downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch. Typically 10-15% for bumper pull, 20-25% for fifth wheel. Counts against your truck's payload!

Keep your loaded trailer weight at 80% of max towing capacity for hills, headwinds, and emergencies.

Watch Tongue Weight

Keep tongue weight at 10-15% of trailer weight. Too little causes sway; too much overloads your rear axle.

Tongue weight + passengers + cargo in truck = payload used. This is often the limiting factor, not towing capacity!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I stay at 80% of my towing capacity?
Your vehicle's maximum towing capacity is measured under ideal conditions—flat roads, no wind, sea level altitude. Real-world towing includes hills, headwinds, passing maneuvers, and emergency stops. The 80% rule gives you a safety buffer for these situations while reducing strain on your drivetrain, brakes, and transmission.
What's the difference between GVWR and dry weight?
Dry weight (or UVW - Unloaded Vehicle Weight) is what the RV weighs empty from the factory. GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum safe weight when fully loaded. The difference between them is your cargo carrying capacity (CCC)—what you can safely add in gear, water, propane, and supplies.
Why is payload capacity often the limiting factor?
Many people focus on towing capacity but overlook payload. Tongue weight (10-20% of your trailer) plus passengers and cargo in your truck all count against payload. A half-ton truck might tow 10,000 lbs but only have 1,500 lbs payload. A heavy trailer with 1,000 lbs tongue weight leaves only 500 lbs for everything else in the truck!
How do I know my actual loaded weight?
The only accurate way is to weigh your fully loaded RV at a truck scale or RV weigh station. CAT scales at truck stops can weigh individual axles. Many RV rallies and dealerships offer weighing services. We recommend weighing your rig at least once per year or whenever you make significant changes to your setup.
Does tongue weight affect my truck's payload?
Yes! Tongue weight (the downward force on your hitch) counts directly against your truck's payload capacity. If your truck has 2,000 lbs payload and your trailer has 800 lbs tongue weight, you only have 1,200 lbs left for passengers, cargo in the bed, and anything else in the truck.
